Aging and Rehabilitation

Work in this core area emphasizes prevention of disability associated with aging. Ongoing research interfaces with interests in neuroscience and rehabilitation outcomes and includes initiatives on immunology, muscle physiology, and treatment of osteoarthritis. Research is focusing on the interface between the immune system, exercise and the aging process in both animal and human models. Interventions for postural control are being investigated, with an emphasis on combining studies of function with basic mechanisms of movement control in older adults. Use of acupuncture to improve functioning and well-being in older persons with osteoarthritis symptoms is being investigated.
